Surface water measurement

Surface water can be affected by land use, agricultural practices, pollution and climate change. As you already know, monitoring and treatment of surface water requires significant investments in time and money. These investments and public health may be jeopardized if surface water changes during extreme events or contamination.

We understand the challenges of working in natural environments. Our specialists have decades of experience with water quality applications such as discharge consent, diffuse pollution monitoring, storm water, dredging, construction compliance as well as flood alert monitoring, river gauging and flow using ADCP.

We can help you design your monitoring program including feedback on site selection, calibration frequency and recommended parameters. Low power availability, biofouling, alarms and remote viewing of data are all issues which can be solved using our innovative solutions. Continuous monitoring helps you to better understand your water course allowing you to detect events, make real-time decisions and manage your site. Our systems play a key role in improving water quality and plant efficiency, while allowing for early warning and rapid response to events such as floods and algal blooms.


When monitoring surface water in general two different ways of measurements are used:

  • The routine measurement on site and the extraction of water samples for later analysis in the laboratory. These measurements are called Spot Measurements due to the fact that they take place on site and are singular. Water samples are taken in parallel for later analysis in the Lab. The transport and storage of the samples for analysis in the Lab require a cooling box and a freezer with 4 degree Celsius, to avoid growth of microorganism which may later distort the analytical results.

  • The Continuous Monitoring of the water bodies at established locations. In this case the measurement takes place continuously by logging and storing data in preset time intervals accordingly. The data transfer takes place continuously and enables access to the data at any time. Continuous monitoring can be more complex to implement but provides a far greater overview of the condition of the water body, compared with a once per week taken spot measurement.
For monitoring of surface water Xylem Analytics offers the MultiLine®, HandyLab, ProfiLine und photoFlex portable meters and sensors, with regard to pH/ORP, oxygen, conductivity and turbidity. Furthermore, for the continuous monitoring of surface water Xylem Analytics offers the IQ Sensor Net with its standard IQ sensors and specially designed reagent free spectral probes (SF versions).
